Living in Marine Heights
Victorian terraces, big skies and the cliff lift down to the sand.
Marine Heights is the high ground - the Victorian clifftop district built when Porthaven briefly fancied itself a resort. Tall terraces and red-brick mansion blocks line Marine Parade and the roads behind it, and almost everything up here was built to make the most of the view: bay windows, balconies and ceilings you could lose a kite in.
The cliff lift, restored in 2019, rattles down to the beach from Easter to October and is genuinely how residents get to the sand. Up top there is a small parade of cafes, a bowling green that takes itself seriously, and the long grass cliff walk that runs west towards the lighthouse.
Rentals here are dominated by flats - mansion-block conversions with period proportions and a growing number of refurbished apartments with lifts and secure entry. Sea-facing homes carry a premium and a maintenance obligation in equal measure; the well-run blocks have already invested in marine-grade glazing, and it shows in the running costs.
