Living in Old Town
Narrow lanes, painted terraces and the Thursday market.
The Old Town climbs gently back from the harbour in a maze of narrow lanes and colour-washed terraces - pink next to blue next to butter yellow, and woe betide anyone who repaints without consulting the neighbours. This is the postcard Porthaven, but it is also a proper working neighbourhood with a butcher, a bakery and a hardware shop that has been there since 1962.
Thursday is market day on Market Lane, and it still organises the week: produce, fish, plants and a secondhand book stall that has defeated stronger wills than yours. The independent shops along Chapel Lane and Fore Street keep the lanes busy year round, not just in August.
For renters, the Old Town offers two and three-bedroom terraces with courtyards rather than gardens, studios and flats above the shops, and permit-only parking throughout - most residents keep the car in the long-stay and forget about it. Demand is strongest here of anywhere in town, so register with us early and be ready to view quickly.
