Living in Abbots Mere
A green, a mere, a thatched terrace and the Lamb and Flag - village life as advertised.
Abbots Mere takes its name from the broad pond at the heart of the village, once the fishpond of the abbey that owned these lands, now home to ducks of strong opinions. The village green runs down to the water, ringed by thatched and brick-and-flint cottages, and the Lamb and Flag has stood on its corner since the seventeenth century.
The housing stock is older and smaller-scaled than Milton Parva's: cottages on Mere Lane and around the green, former farmworkers' terraces, and a scattering of barns converted over the past twenty years on the village edge. Gardens tend to be generous, parking arrangements tend to be informal, and listed status is common - buyers should budget accordingly.
The village retains a small shop and post office counter, open mornings, alongside the pub, the church and a primary school federation shared with the neighbouring parish. Wexbridge is eight minutes by car, and a community minibus runs into town on market day. Footpaths lead from the green across the old abbey grounds towards the river.
