Technical Team Augmentation

Experienced senior engineering capability added to your existing team - for specific projects, additional capacity, or ongoing senior input alongside your internal engineers.

Team Augmentation

We provide technical team augmentation for businesses and development teams across the UK and Isle of Man. Experienced senior engineering capability added to your existing team - for a specific project that requires skills your team does not have, for a period when your team needs additional capacity, or for ongoing work that benefits from a senior external perspective alongside your internal engineers.

Team augmentation is different from outsourcing. When we augment your team, we work as part of it - using your tools, following your processes, attending your standups, and treating the outcome as a shared responsibility. The goal is to add genuine capability to your team, not to receive specifications and return deliverables independently.

Every team augmentation engagement is staffed personally by Owen Jones, OLXR's founder and lead engineer. When you engage OLXR for team augmentation, you get a senior engineer with over a decade of production experience - not a resource allocated from a bench.

Who This Is For

Development teams that need senior engineering capability for a specific project that exceeds their current bandwidth or skill set
Businesses with an internal team that is delivering well but needs senior oversight and direction on a complex technical challenge
Organisations that need to accelerate delivery on a time-sensitive project without making permanent hires
Companies whose internal team has gaps in specific areas - database design, API integration, cloud architecture - that need to be filled for a specific project
Businesses that want experienced engineering input during a critical phase of a project - architecture, launch, or a major technical transition
Teams that would benefit from a senior engineer working alongside them over time to improve their practices and capability

Our Approach

1
Work as Part of Your Team

Team augmentation that treats the engagement as outsourcing does not achieve the goal of adding genuine capability to your team. We join your team properly - using your communication tools, participating in your planning and review processes, and treating the project's outcome as our shared responsibility rather than a contract deliverable. The boundary between internal and external should be invisible to the work.

2
Transfer Knowledge Throughout

The test of a good team augmentation engagement is whether the team is more capable at the end than at the beginning. We approach every engagement with deliberate knowledge transfer as a goal - explaining decisions, sharing techniques, reviewing code with teaching intent, and documenting approaches in ways that remain useful after the engagement ends. We want to make your team better, not create dependency on our continued involvement.

3
Be Honest About Fit

Team augmentation works well when the engagement is well-scoped and the chemistry between the augmented resource and the existing team is right. If we are not the right fit for your team's working style, technology, or culture, we will tell you that. A team augmentation engagement that does not work well for both sides does not deliver value for either.

Why Choose OLXR

Team augmentation that treats the engagement as outsourcing does not add genuine capability to your team. We integrate properly - shared tools, shared processes, shared accountability for the outcome - so the contribution is real and the knowledge stays with your team afterwards.

Truly Integrated

We work as part of your team, not from a contract boundary

Knowledge Transferred

Your team is more capable at the end than at the beginning

Senior-Led

Staffed by the founder - never reallocated from a bench

Honest Fit

If we are not the right match, we will tell you up front

The test of a good team augmentation engagement is whether your team is stronger at the end - we work alongside your engineers with knowledge transfer as a deliberate goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

In practice the distinction can be subtle, but the intent is different. A contractor typically receives specifications and works independently to deliver them. Team augmentation means working as part of the team - sharing the same processes, contributing to the same decisions, and being accountable for the same outcomes. The degree of integration with your team is higher, and the expectation of knowledge transfer is explicit.

Yes - we work remotely as standard and integrate effectively with distributed teams. We are experienced with asynchronous communication, remote collaboration tools, and the practices that make remote team working effective. For engagements where occasional in-person presence would be valuable, we can discuss what is practical given location and the nature of the work.

For team augmentation to be genuinely useful, a minimum of four to six weeks is typically required - less than that does not allow enough time to integrate with the team, understand the codebase, and make a meaningful contribution. For shorter, more defined technical tasks, a code review or architecture consultancy engagement may be more appropriate.

Yes - providing senior oversight and direction for offshore development teams is something we have experience with. This typically involves architecture direction, code review, quality standards setting, and communication support between the offshore team and the business stakeholders. The specific approach depends on the team's structure, working hours, and communication practices.
