Practical AI for Your Business

We design and build AI-powered solutions for businesses across the UK and Isle of Man. Practical applications of artificial intelligence that automate processes, enhance decision-making, reduce manual work, and unlock value from the data your business already generates - without the hype, without the overpromising, and without the expensive experiments that do not deliver.

AI is not a product you buy - it is a capability you build into your software. The most effective AI implementations are not standalone systems but features embedded into the tools your team already uses: a document processing step that used to require human review, a customer communication that used to be written manually, a decision that used to depend on someone's availability. We identify where AI adds genuine value in your specific context and build it in as a reliable component of your existing systems.

Every AI system we build is designed and delivered personally by Owen Jones, OLXR's founder and lead engineer. We use AI tools extensively in our own development practice - including OpenAI, Anthropic's Claude, and Microsoft Copilot - which means we bring practical, first-hand experience of what these tools can and cannot do reliably in production.

Who This Is For

Businesses looking to automate repetitive tasks that currently require human judgment or manual processing
Teams that want to add AI-powered features to existing software - document processing, intelligent search, content generation, or decision support
Organisations with large volumes of unstructured data that contain valuable information they cannot currently access at scale
Businesses that want AI-assisted tools to improve their team's productivity without replacing the human judgment that actually matters
Companies that want to integrate AI capabilities into their products to improve the experience for their customers
Teams that have experimented with AI tools informally and want to build reliable, production-grade AI features

Our Approach

1
Identify Genuine Value Before Building

Not every process benefits from AI, and many that do benefit less than you might expect before seeing the results of a proper assessment. We start every AI engagement by identifying where AI can deliver measurable, reliable value in your specific context - and being honest when the answer is that a simpler, more reliable non-AI approach would serve you better. AI that works reliably 90% of the time and fails unexpectedly the other 10% is not acceptable in a production business context. We only build AI features where we are confident they will be reliable enough to trust.

2
Build AI as a Component, Not a System

The most reliable AI implementations embed AI as a component within a larger system that manages its inputs, validates its outputs, and handles its failures gracefully. Raw AI model outputs are not reliable enough to be presented directly to users or used as the sole input to consequential decisions. We build the validation, review, and fallback logic that makes AI features trustworthy in production - which is different from building AI features that work in a demo.

3
Be Honest About Limitations

AI model outputs are probabilistic, not guaranteed. General-purpose models do not have specific knowledge of your domain without fine-tuning or retrieval-augmented generation. And AI does not replace the human judgment that actually drives your business. What we promise is that the AI features we build are reliable enough to use in production, grounded in your specific data where needed, and designed to fail safely when they encounter situations outside their competence.

Why Choose OLXR

We use AI tools extensively in our own development practice, which gives us a practical rather than theoretical understanding of what works and what does not. We know the failure modes, the cost traps, and the gap between demo capability and production reliability.

Senior-Led

Built by someone who uses AI tools daily

Honest Assessment

If AI is not the right answer, we will say so

Production-Grade

Built for reliability, not just demonstration

Long-Term Support

We monitor and improve AI features after launch

The most effective AI implementations are not standalone systems - they are reliable features embedded into the tools your team already uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes - integrating AI capabilities into existing software is the most common form of AI project we take on. We connect AI APIs to your existing application through a properly designed integration layer that manages prompts, handles responses, validates outputs, and fails gracefully when the AI returns something unexpected. We work with your existing architecture rather than requiring you to rebuild around a new AI platform.

AI model outputs are probabilistic, not deterministic - the same input can produce different outputs on different runs, and models can confidently produce incorrect information. We address this through output validation, human review workflows for consequential decisions, retrieval-augmented generation to ground AI responses in your specific data, and confidence scoring where appropriate. The architecture of the system around the AI model is as important as the model itself.

When using the OpenAI or Anthropic APIs with the appropriate settings, your data is not used to train their public models. We configure API integrations to use the correct settings for data privacy, and we are transparent about what data is sent to which services. For use cases where data privacy requirements prevent sending data to external APIs, we can implement solutions using locally-hosted open-source models.

We view AI as a tool that makes your existing team more capable and productive - not as a replacement for the people whose judgment, relationships, and contextual understanding actually drive your business. The tasks AI handles well are repetitive, well-defined, and do not require genuine judgment. The tasks humans handle well - the ones that actually matter - are not at risk from the AI tools available today.
