Design for Android Conventions

Android users have their own expectations for how apps should behave - different from iOS in specific ways that matter. Navigation patterns, back button behaviour, permission request timing, and notification handling all follow Android conventions that users expect to be respected. We design Android applications to Material Design guidelines and Android platform conventions, not as a reskin of an iOS design.

Test Across the Device Landscape

Android runs on a vastly more diverse range of hardware than iOS - different screen sizes, different resolutions, different performance levels, and different Android versions. We test Android applications on a range of devices and screen sizes throughout development to identify layout and performance issues that only appear on specific devices or configurations. We do not test only on current flagship hardware.

Handle Android Permissions Correctly

Android's permission model requires apps to request permissions at the appropriate time, explain why they are needed, and handle gracefully the case where the user denies them. Permission handling that does not follow Android's requirements results in Play Store rejection and a poor user experience. We implement permission handling correctly from the start rather than as an afterthought before submission.

The core application logic is shared in our React Native approach, but platform-specific work is required for both. Android has a more complex permission model, a more diverse hardware landscape to test against, different navigation conventions, and different app store requirements. Google Play's review process is generally faster than Apple's but still enforces requirements around privacy, security, and content. We account for these differences throughout development rather than assuming that what works on iOS will work on Android.

We design Android apps to support Android 10 and later, which covers the significant majority of active Android devices. Supporting older Android versions creates increasing development complexity for diminishing user coverage. We will recommend the right minimum Android version for your specific app and user base during the planning phase.

Yes - taking over maintenance of existing Android apps is something we do. We review the existing app's code, architecture, and Play Console configuration, and give you an honest assessment of its current state before taking it on. Apps with significant technical debt or that target very old Android versions may require more substantial work to bring to a maintainable standard.
